Hi friends,
I said I would give you a summary of today’s FDA review of Pfizer’s booster data. However, school pick-up for my kiddos interrupted the last part of the meeting where the FDA discussed and voted whether or not to recommend boosters. And, that’s one of the most important parts of the meeting that I wanted to summarize with you all!
FYI - After the final afternoon discussion (that I missed), the FDA voted against recommending a 3rd dose of the Pfizer vaccine to the general public (not due to safety or efficacy though). They still recommended the booster for some subgroups. And, global vaccine equity was mentioned! You can imagine the discussion was full of great debate regarding the science of this recommendation. This is public health in action - where science meets real-world scenarios.
In order to do this summary justice, I need to go watch that last discussion that was interrupted by two cute kids (mine). =) I have a strict no-work-after-5-or-on-weekends rule - so, that means I’ll catch up next week on this.
If you want to read a good summary, I thought this article summarized the meeting nicely. And, I heard that our gal-pal, YLE, will provide a summary too over at her Substack - which are always really good. We texted back and forth all day today like good epidemiology-data-nerd-friends and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Next time, I need to throw an epid-watch-party with cookies and coffee. =)
See you all Monday and I hope you have a great weekend. I’ll be watching my hummingbirds with my plants. Do you see the hummingbird in the pic? =) I hope you all have some time to rest and enjoy something you love to do this weekend.
Also, as a quick reminder - I do not read comments on FB, Twitter, or insta for these posts. I only read comments for paid subscribers here on Substack and always appreciate the dialogue and discussions in this community. Happy weekend!
-Emily
Emily can you please share some more resources or give me your opinion on boosters for individuals who had a negative reaction to the Pfizer Covid series + 1st booster? (Female 63yo after first series she had 6th nerve pulsy, seizures, and developed shingles. After her first booster she had her first stroke). She is concerned about having another booster and what effects it may have on her body despite wanting to be vaccinated to protect her family. I’d love to give some trusted proven information to her that can help her make the best decision for herself. I’m not sure where to find this information. Any help would be appreciated.
So how will this impact participants in the Pfizer vaccine trial, many of whom are months further past their 2nd doses than the general population Although some were asked to take part in booster trials a lot were not
Does this mean their trial may no longer plan to offer them boosters, as had been planned?
